That construction segment that is growing at the fastest pace is data centers, projected to hit about $456 billion by 2030. Behind that growth is a trend to embrace A.I. in everything that we do.
Schools at every level are determining how to balance using A.I., like ChatGPT, as a tool for research versus a reason to accuse a student of cheating. Businesses similarly are pondering if a report generated by ChatGPT is effective or missing a human touch.
Meghan O’Rourke, executive editor of The Yale Review and a professor of creative writing at Yale University, wrote an opinion piece about what A.I. is doing to students. She jokes that when she dove into ChatGPT to research its use she created a love affair with a platform that complemented her skills and gave her artificial compassion for balancing her life as a professor, mother and writer. With that, she found that she had more time to complete her to-do lists with ChatGPT as her assistant.
She says in The New York Times article,
“Formerly overtaxed, I found myself writing warmer emails simply because the logistical parts were already handled. I had time to add a joke, a question, to be me again. Using A.I. to power through my to-do lists made me want to write more. It left me with hours—and energy—where I used to feel drained.”
Outsourcing to ChatGPT
Scott Birdsong, regional director of Technology at Tangram Interiors, says ChatGPT can change the way teams communicate with each other. He has found 10 ways to bring ChatGPT into your business:
Craft Effective Meeting Agendas: A well-structured agenda keeps meetings focused and productive. Use ChatGPT to outline objectives, discussion points and time allocations in seconds, ensuring everyone is prepared.
Generate Meeting Summaries and Action Items: ChatGPT can quickly summarize discussions, highlight key takeaways and list actionable next steps. This keeps your team accountable and eliminates the hassle of manual note-taking.
Draft Follow-up Emails: No more struggling to compose the perfect follow-up. ChatGPT can generate professional recap emails that reinforce meeting decisions and keep projects moving forward.
Facilitate Brainstorming Sessions: Need fresh ideas? ChatGPT can spark creativity by suggesting innovative solutions, prompting discussion topics and generating alternative perspectives for problem-solving.
Establish Collaboration Guidelines: Efficient teamwork starts with clear expectations. Use ChatGPT to draft best practices for communication, remote work protocols and project workflows.
Summarize Reports for Discussion: Long reports can slow down decision-making. ChatGPT can condense documents into digestible summaries, allowing teams to focus on key insights.
Enhance Multilingual Communication: Global teams? No problem. ChatGPT can translate messages and simplify technical jargon, ensuring smooth collaboration across different languages and expertise levels.
Create Engaging Presentations: From crafting compelling slide content to generating persuasive talking points, ChatGPT helps make your team’s presentations more impactful.
Support Strategic Decision Making: Are you weighing options in a team meeting? ChatGPT can outline pros and cons, provide data-backed insights and help teams make informed decisions faster.
Keep Teams Aligned with Project Plans: Use ChatGPT to create project roadmaps, task lists, and communication templates that keep everyone on the same page and working efficiently.
The Human Touch
When using A.I. tools, be warned—there are drawbacks to completely relying on this artificial love affair. Sometimes, ChatGPT gets it wrong, very wrong. A study from Purdue University concluded that ChatGPT presents the wrong answers at a rate of 52%. Are you willing to gamble that the information you share with colleagues or customers is wrong at that rate? We are not!
As we mentioned at the beginning of this blog, there also is the human aspect of running a meeting, composing marketing materials, developing specifications or reviewing team plans. Our professional skills are needed to fact check and add an emotional touch that connects with other people. After all, the purpose of communication in every form is to form a connection to share knowledge.
O’Rourke even noticed it in her work, saying:
“When ChatGPT drafted or edited an email for me, I felt less connected to the outcome. Once, having asked A.I. to draft a complicated note based on bullet points I gave it, I sent an email that I realized, retrospectively, did not articulate what I myself felt. It was as if a ghost with silky syntax had colonized my brain, controlling my fingers as they typed. That was almost a relief when the task was a fraught work email — but it would be counterproductive, and depressing, for any creative project of my own.”
